Attention to process and an emphasis on collaboration marks Pete’s approach to design. His projects always seek to understand and celebrate the inherently intertwined conditions of ecology and culture. Prior to founding Siteworks, he directed the VMDO Landscape Studio, and served as a project designer at Nelson Byrd Landscape Architects and at EDAW in Denver, CO where he helped lead the design of numerous award winning projects. The idea of habitat, the incorporation of dynamic processes and the exploration of the native condition of a place are central to his work.

This focus has been applied to projects of every scale and in a diversity of places. The design of projects ranging from corporate campuses, new town planning and brownfield redevelopment to private gardens, site specific sculpture and community parks is always informed by an exploration of both natural and cultural systems. A number of projects have received regional and national awards for both design excellence and sustainable design. All of the studio’s projects aim to create meaningful, healthy and ecologically intelligent places that positively serve human communities. Collaboration and integration of diverse viewpoints and expertise are central to the way the studio operates.

Pete is a Fellow of The American Academy in Rome and is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the U.S. Green Building Council. He has served on the both the architecture and landscape architecture faculties at the University of Virginia and continues to serve as a critic on student reviews. He and Siteworks are frequent contributors to community based volunteer design efforts.
