A simple wall of black slate extends Charlottesville’s pedestrian mall toward a public amphitheater while forming a series of spaces between the street and city hall. Winner of a Thomas Jefferson Center for Free Speech competition, the monumentcelebrates the first amendment with a public chalkboard: a place for uninhibited expression and discourse. The wall is joined by a podium set in a gathering area below sculptures of the First Amendment’s authors. Oriented to Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello, the monument recognizes history while challenging us to move forward as a nation.
