Ecourban-Habitat 22
Barcelona, Spain with William McDonough + Partners

This project represents an attempt to integrate ideas about buildings, human community, topography and technology. A mixed use, high density set of projects including social housing and public urban space will replace a former 19th century factory leaving only the historic portal building as a remnant. A system of planted roofs, water harvesting and solar collectors will maximize the site's ability to manage its interaction with existing ecological conditions while reaping the benefits of intelligent design. Buildings are optimized for solar orientation, wind orientation and are also designed to utilize natural daylight for interior spaces. The courtyards and outdoor spaces reflect the topographic undercarriage of parking garages and are designed as series of folds, planes and reveals. Edges open to accommodate ventilation and lighting elements for the garages below while dematerializing the groundplane of the project.
